my new flower - what is it

Last year I saw this flower in somebody's garden and I asked if I could have a little plantlet or some seeds. The little plants did not survive. It was probably too late in the year(November). The nice lady also gave me a seedpod. I had forgotten about it when suddenly this plant appeared in my flower bed. I first thought it was a stray Aubergine plant, but as it got bigger, I remembered . I think it's amazing . The lady did not know the name and I have not been able to find it on the internet.
Can anybody help???

Found it in Google under flowers of Turkey, it says it is a wildflower, no further info.

Well it's definitely not a Dahlia.
thanks woodspeckie, I have found it with your info. It is a Datura, common name Angels Trumpet, Devils Trumpet, Thornapple (seed)

Sorry, but it doesn't really look like a Datura / Brugmansia to me.

It looks as though it has a 'double layer' of petals, and the leaves look hard, shiny, & pointed - not at all like the Daturas that I've seen.

Datura flowers are long and pendulous - hanging rather than erect and with 5 pointed lobes.

This might be a species I've not seen, but I'm doubtful...

thanks for the input Keith, the leaves are not shiny or hard, very similar to an Aubergine plant. Somebody here now told me that in Turkey they call it 'Patlıcangiller' - something aubergine??

Brugmansia are definitely hanging, they are similar but not the same family. This makes me seem knowledgable , but I know nothing really, only read about it.
Wikipedia says Daturas are horizontal or even erect and Brugmansia differs from Datura in that it is woody, making shrubs or small trees, and in that it has pendulous flowers, rather than erect ones.
The one called Datura Metel is closest to the one I've got, but mine seems more frilly and the flowers are definitely horizontal.

dippersgirl, I see what you mean - the Datura metel certainly looks more like your specimen (it has the 'double layer' of petals), but for some reason, it isn't listed in my copies of the Royal Horticultural Society Encyclopedia, or in 'Flowers of Northern Cyprus', published on behalf of 'TULIPS'...

The dark stem certainly matches the description here datura metel, - and 'double frilled' flowers are mentioned here http://www.thompson-morgan.com/flowers/flower-seeds/half-hardy-annual-seeds/datura-metel-double-blackcurrant-swirl/7180TM- and the pointed, folded leaves appear similar (although it is difficult to tell from a picture).

The buds and leaves are very similar to a Datura.
Could be a cross with a ?????

Googled Datura this is what it came up with.
On sale on e-bay.
Datura - Reina Del Noche - Queen of the Night, but known by many other names.
A tender plant with spectacular semi-double two tone flowers.
Best grown as a patio or conservatory plant.
Grow in Sun or light shade.
Propagation requires high temperature up to 28deg C germination can take up tp 3 weeks.

I had not really looked at places like T & M and unfortunalely my RHS book is still in England.
At the moment it does not seem to be setting seeds, but if it does, I'll share them.

I noticed T & M do a yellow Datura, might have to treat myself to that!!!

Deffo a Datura Eva...
but it is frillier and sillier than any we have seen.

Hardy the gardener sez if you want to grow one...

and the yellow and the orange varieties are relatively common here (grown for a season in GB)
and in Australia where they survive winters...
They thrive in Africa...

he suggests maybe you'd like to think about the traditional white datura - often called angels' trumpets.
It has a beautiful scent (more intense at night?).
They are poisonous as you know.
They do get a bit raggy and scraggy in winter
but in full flower they are fantastic.

This was the very first flower and it was the most spectacular one. There are lots of flowers and buds still, so you will be able to see them, but none rival that first one.
They also have a lovely gentle scent in the evening.
