Can anyone tell me should I water a common or garden white jasmine??? I have tried watering it, and not watering it and still it goes brown and looks like it might die! I thought these would be really easy out here as I see lots of lovely, prolific flowers on some.

Hi sammydavis,

I have two and one never gets water but the other needs water sporadically through the hottest period and both flower well. They do however suffer from a pest, a caterpillar or a leaf minor or some such thing that does give the leaves a brown appearance. I would snip some off and take it to Mediterranean Gardener in Alsancak if you are on the west side.

we have a big one and it does have an autumn period when it looks nearly dead, then it revives. I water it once a week in summer.

Hi , white jasmine ( Oficianale ) is a deciduous climber in the Uk unless planted in a sheltered south facing position , hence the leaves go brown and fall off around this time of the year . Over here my jasmine is still in full bloom and green , but from the centre it is browning and i will cut it back in a weeks time . The yellow ( winter jasmine ) is just starting to bloom.

Re watering it depends on the soil and the maturity , In good soil ( i mix osmocote and water retaining crystals with the soil when planting ) and mature climber of 4 to 5 years old should be self sufficient for water maybe apart from late July August here . The problem with watering mature plants is the roots which naturally go deep to source moisture are drawn back to the surface to seek the artificially added water which doesn't soak in to the same depth as natural steady rainfall .

My neighbour still waters all his plants , i only water newly planted ones till established , results very similar .But mature plants with deep root systems will cope better with drought or long periods of limited rainfall ie Cyprus .

Hope this helps

Paul
