Funds taken from accounts without you knowing

Good morning All
Just got a big surprise went into our bank accounts to check things out and found the government is now taking out 2% from the accounts without us knowing and without our consent.
ALL banks are doing this, apparently.
Does anybody have any up to date info on this one please.
It has to be theft as we gave no permission for it to happen.

Tanky

Could I ask the name of your bank and the type of account(s) that money is being taken from?

None of my accounts are affected...

CreditWest Bank both GBP and TL account 2% taken off of the monthly interest.
Very surprised as this is an excellent bank with many years of excellent service.

So they've taken 2% of your interest Tanky, not 2% of the total balance of each account?

Nothing taken from my tl and GBP accounts with CreditWest, however they are current accounts so i don't get interest.

It was in the news a few weeks ago. The government taking percentage of interest from savings accounts. You might have missed it, as it was low down on the list of things they were doing for the earthquake relief fund. They were going to be automatically taking deductions for wages, but that has now been made voluntary. It will be affect all savings accounts at all banks here.

Yes I paid rental tax today and an extra 1.5% was charged for the earthquake relief fund. I was told it would be every month for the next 9 months.

Thanks for that alphamike.
It would have been nice and polite for the bank to have actually informed it's customers and endorsed it all
However I still think it is totally wrong a Government can withdraw funds from an account WITHOUT the account holder OR the bank being aware of why the withdrawal has been made. Where will it end. Are we the account holders in charge of our accounts or not??

I am personally against this withdrawal, mostly because it was done without our consent, as I had already contributed many thousands to the earthquake people.

Again as I said yesterday after the deduction of 2% a small amount was put back in. Just what is going on??

They are your accounts, you are the owners, not the government. That is why they are in your name(s)

I agree Tanky, they shouldn't be able to take money from your account without your consent, they already take a tax payment. I am not sure if there was a different percentage or not due to the amount held, I can't remember. Wish I had saved the article. Creditwest could easily have sent a message about it through their app, as not everyone reads the local newspapers. Thank goodness for Google translate there, is all I can say.
As Joandjelly stated, it will go on for 9 months.
As an aside, it's really not worth keeping savings here if you can have savings accounts in UK, as you get much better interest rates, albeit you do have to consider your tax position.
There was an uproar from the workers having money taken off without their consent, so the government back pedalled.

This is one of the articles in the news from weeks ago, about further tax for earthquake relief fund, there's quite a list.

Thank you alphamike and others that have replied.

It is most certainly happening and will continue until January.

Sitting on our hand doing nothing is surely not the answer. Or they will simply say '' that was easy let's do that again''. Enough is enough.

Yes I have written to my bank about this.

Please keep an eye on YOUR accounts

Tanky.

I've not got a huge amount in savings account here, and so far haven't been affected, but it will happen when next interest (for what it's worth) is due.
I'm not against contributing to the fund, in fact have already done so, but I would rather have the choice. It's pennies from my account, but it's the principal of the thing. If the Govt. do it for this, what's going to be the next thing, now that they have set a precedent? I really am surprised that there has not been a backlash about this in the local community.

 Most likely. Am sure there will be much richer pickings elsewhere though.

I disagree?!
I receive 17.5% interest on my monthly TL savings accounts. Where am I going to get that rate in the UK?!
The best they can offer is 6/7% bit I can't touch it for a year, sometimes 2!
