What happens with Monarch Airlines now?

Monarch has gone into administration after failing to gain a renewel of its
Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (Atol) from the Civil Aviation Authority.
This meant it was no longer be able to sell Atol-protected holidays
from midnight on Monday morning and, accordingly,
just after midnight it announced it had appointed KPMG as liquidators.

What if I have booked a package holiday with Monarch?

If you bought a package holiday through Monarch while the licence was still in effect
up until midnight on Sunday/Monday – you will be Atol-protected.
That means if you are abroad, you will be put on an alternative flight home with another carrier.
If you are in the UK, you will be entitled to a refund.

Talk about luck - this is An early response to OLeary's prayers for more Pilots.

There are rumours that he was spotted at early Mass this morning!

Seems like if you have a booking more than 2 weeks ahead then the CAA will not make any arrangements for your flights and you lose your money.

The inevitable consequence of all this turmoil is that we shall see our airfares increased.

Monarch Airlines has ceased trading

Monarch has confirmed that the following companies have ceased trading
and now entered administration:

Monarch Airlines Ltd
Monarch Holidays Ltd (ATOL Number 2275)
First Aviation Ltd (ATOL Number 4888) previously trading as Monarch Airlines
Avro Ltd (ATOL Number 1939)
Somewhere2stay Ltd

As a result, we are sorry to inform you that, as of 2 October 2017,
all future holidays and flights provided by these companies have been cancelled
and are no longer operating.

This is an unprecedented situation and because there are up to 110,000 passengers abroad,
the UK Government has asked the CAA to coordinate flights back to the UK
for all Monarch customers currently overseas.
These new flights will be at no extra cost to you.

If you’re not covered by ATOL protection as your flight isn’t a package holiday, and your travel insurance won’t pay out as you don’t have the rare ‘travel abandonment’ cover; there are three further helpful protections to try.

1. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1979. This says that if you pay for something – or even part-pay – on a credit card and it costs between £100 and £30,000, then the credit card company is jointly liable.

In travel, it only works when you book direct, but that’s fine for those who paid Monarch on a credit card – as long as the cost per flight is over £100. So get in touch with the credit card firm and ask to make a ‘section 75’ claim (and use the name) for any costs not received. There are full templates for doing this on http://www.mse.me/section75

2. Chargeback. If you paid on a debit card or a credit card (though if over £100 on a credit card use section 75 instead), then there is a less well-known protection called ‘chargeback’.

With this you ask your card provider to do a chargeback, which means it will ask Monarch’s bank for your money back as you have not received the service. While it’s not a legal protection like Section 75, this is a core protection in Visa, Mastercard and American Express’ rules and it can swiftly help people get their money back. In fact, it was this route that we suggested in the Lowcostholidays issue, which got the most success. Again full help on MSE.

3. Paypal. If you paid on paypal, you're generally reliant on its own payment protection scheme. Yet during Lowcostholiday collapse, this worked fine, so get in touch with it.
