TV sound problem

I have lost sound to my TV, the picture is fine and sound is OK with a DVD player connected. I also still have sound on my laptop when watching NTV. I have tried the Multimax helpline but it keeps coming up with an error message. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? I did wonder if it could be the HDMI cable. I'm not very technically savvy!!
