Parking Fine - AlsancAK

T'was the season of goodwill in Alsancak on Friday last and the rain was sheeting down. At around 9.00 p.m. four weary travellers in search of good food and wine made their way through ghostly quiet Alsancak and peering into the dark night through very busy windscreen wipers spied that the Fast Food Cafe was open.

Lest the ladies got a good drenching the driver parked his car adjacent the restaurant, outside the closed upholstery shop opposite, and they all dashed in.

Although t'was a very quiet night and the doner burners having already been switched off, the landlord being in a festive mood offered to cook something for the travellers and switched the heaters on so they might dry. Three of the travellers enjoyed a glass or two whilst the driver, who was being good, enjoyed only a cola so he might bring the others to their dwellings safely and without incident.

After about 20 minutes or so the Landlord dashed out of the restaurant and when he came back he was brandishing a notice of monetry fine that an observant Policeman on duty on such a devilish night placed on the car windscreen.

The Landlord explained that he had seen the Policeman and ran to greet him to explain that the weary travellers had just arrived and were sheltering from the rain whilst awaiting their sustenance. He pleaded in vain for the policeman to look kindly on the poor souls but to no avail. The Policeman was after all only doing his duty and notwithstanding the foul weather and the quietness of the night he would have expected the driver to have parked in a properly constituted car park and not on the main road on a double yellow.

The Landlord pleaded that others, including Policemen, park in a similar position everyday and that no obstruction was being caused that night. Invoking the season of goodwill the Landlord asked if it was possible that the Policeman might offer a severe telling off instead of issuing a parking ticket but the Policeman was not to be swayed. He had after all been waiting for such an offender all evening.

And so t'was today, the day before Christmas, that in penance the driver visited Girne Police Station and paid over the princely sum of TL 169.50, not a trivial sum! This tale is made public so you not be tempted to park in a similar fashion when you next visit the Fast Food Cafe and instead stay safe from prowling Policemen and park in the car park alongside Cenap and the Dolphin Restaurants.
