Staining on Tiles in Pool

Went round yesterday to look at my friends pool yesterday. At the deep end he has a lot of bad staining, probably about 2 rows of tiles. He bought the property about 5 mths ago and said that the staining has gradually got worse and thinks it is acid staining. He also has light staining near the top of the sides. Is it possible to replace floor tiles with the pool full? I believe that you can get tile cement that works underwater?

I wouldn't advise it - when the old tiles are removed, it is likely that the isolation (waterproofing layer) under the tiles will be compromised, and this will need to be made good before fitting new tiles.

For anyone who doesn't realise, the pool is made waterproof by a layer of material applied before the tiles are laid, NOT by the tiles and the grouting!

It sounds as though whoever maintains the pool has been dumping chemicals in at the deep end instead of mixing/diluting them and then distributing them evenly over the whole area of the pool...

It might be possible to fix a couple of rows of tiles on top of the existing tiles, and although this sounds like a 'bodge' it would not be as visible as you might think due to refraction , ripples on the surface, etc. - although you would be able to feel the ridge if you managed to reach the bottom

On balance, the best bet is to drain the pool and do the job properly - and then make sure that the practice of dumping chemicals in one spot ceases forthwith!

If your friend is lucky enough to have access to a neighbouring property with an empty pool, then he could use that to store the water.
