What is the usual water usage on a 10 x 8 swimming pool in the hot summer months with no one using the pool? ... How much evaporation should be expected ?

Evaporation will increase dramatically on overflow so set the system to recycle via main drain when not in use. Due to the laws of physics overnight evaporation is prodigious so set the timer to daytime operation. Add chlorine to pool before cleaning and vacuum it all up into the filter where it will do most good in the dark and last longer.

Its a 10 x 5 pool not the 10 x 8 as first put up, wanting to know as a friends water use is quite high 50 ton in 5 weeks ... They were concerned that maybe water was being wasted or was it normal as they said no-one was using the pool.

If being maintained a few other questions have to be asked, at present one of my customers pools is next to a building site and due to dust etc the pool man is having to vacuum to waste every time therefore their water usage is high, a tanker a week but after seeing their neighbours pool with a dust floor they want it to stay on overflow even though it is not in use.

For a pool of that size, maximum water loss via evaporation, allowing for temperature, exposed windy location, and the pool being on overflow, without any 'splashout' from bathers would be something like 3.5 tons per week.

As snd1966 has mentioned, a pool cleaner 'vacuuming to waste' either from necessity or laziness could account for water lost 'by other means', but even if the pool is being cleaned twice a week, and vacuumed to waste each time, that would probably not take the total loss to more than 5 tons per week.

So, a loss of 10 tons per week looks like a problem. It could be a problem with serious consequences, depending on where all of that water is going - it could liquefy the ground under the pool and destabilize it, or it could get under the house foundations and lead to subsidence. - and damp issues.

It is essential that the cause be investigated and corrected as soon as possible by someone experienced and competent to do so.

Unless there are any obvious cracks in the pool or surround, then the most common suspect would be cracks in the gulley around the pool, followed by cracks in the balance tank, and leaks around the pool light fittings. Other areas would be voids in the concrete at the corners of the pool, or where the 'Roman End' steps have been constructed (if there is a Roman End, that is).

In any event, it needs to be investigated and corrected pronto by an expert.

By what they have told me the usage was very high through the winter as well, but when they visited for a month only 15 ton was used in the pool and house consumption . So not sure what they are going to do now . Just give them this information from you all, thanks very much every one .

So, when they were there, water consumption was low - yes?

When they were not there, relying on reports from someone else, the amount of water usage being reported and charged for was high - yes?

Do you get my drift?

Yes, the water is on a card and the tonnage was put on the meter which has now run out . Think they wanted to clarify the amount of evaporation as its been very hot .
And yes the actual amount when they were there was low compared with this month .

I'm with Keith on this one ,whilst there are many honest and reputable property Management /Pool companies here ,
an absent owner does allow some to "Pad " the bills.
A few years ago a neighbour of mine asked me to check his pool as the electric bills had gone through the roof in his absence,
The pool company has set his timer to run 24/7 !.

In the current hot weather, you can expect evaporation from a pool to be as I stated.

in cold weather, that can drop to almost zero.

If they are not here, and are simply relying on water meter usage how do they know that it's the pool and that they haven't got a leak in their house plumbing or a dribbling toilet cistern?

I think that we need a little more information about what is happening...

People using the pool is irrelevant in most cases - they may splash a bit but in the grand scheme of things it's not an issue... Leaks and pool maintenance constantly back washing and vacuuming to waste is more of an issue. A normally functioning pool does nor require regular hoovering to waste very often neither should it need back-washing until the pressure gauge reads in the high end of the amber section... but many pool cleaning companies see this as a short cut and cost cutting (for them) measure... i.e. they reduce all their costs while upping costs to the client.

If you have a pool leak this would be year-round but this seems not to be the case...

so this would seem to indicate that something is adrift with the pool maintenance regime...

Groucho, the 'Timeline ' is a little hazy - it could be that this problem has only just started, so it could be a 'new' leak - if it is anything to do with the pool at all - we have only been fed information in dribs and drabs, so without full knowledge of the circumstances, I don't think that we can draw a conclusion, except to say that there's a load of water going somewhere that it shouldn't

Keith, all they wanted to know was what is the normal water usage and the evaporation in hot weather on a 10 x 5 pool, they dont want a detailed list of maybe problems, just a approx which you have stated at around 3 and half tons, so the amount that has been used is to high, so they will be looking into what is happening . Thanks every one .
