Thinking of getting a solar powed pool pump,I’ve got a 10x5 m pool. Also thinking of a solution to heating it to extend the swimming season. Anyone had this done? Any idea on cost and if your happy with it would make my day

Hi have been running solar pool pump on my 10x5m overflow pool for 3 years and no real problems. Like any mechanical device needs regular maintainence to ensure optimum performance. Clean pump basket daily and backwash filter bit more regularly than electric to ensure resistance is minimal. But saves a fortune on running costs especially with current electric price increases.

because PV panel prices are down, it became less expensive...

Yes , in principle:
- usually solar DC-AC converters/inverters are for 3 – phase AC pumps, but you can find some for single phase motors as well… less efficient , of course
- As DC pumps are much more efficient as AC pumps and the DC-AC converters + AC pump have a much higher “start up” point, much more PV power needs to be installed as for a DC- DC converter + DC pump.

So, if not sort of “completely overpowered”, the AC pump does start very late and stops very early and circulation (or output) finally is too low.

Another problem often is the cooling: Nearly all DC-AC converters are IP 20 only, have an in build fan and the cooling air must be free from corrosive substances.
Practically not to be achieved in “normal cypriot” pool rooms.

So at a cost of £3000 you must be talking about a 10 year payback time, not counting the interest missed on the initial £3000.

as i said, it is not 3000 GBP.

for a standart 8 x 4 or 10 x 5 pool and an "easy" installation situation, think about 2300 to 2600 Euros.

Around £350 + fitting charge for a good quality one.

If you get the exact same make and model; you could do it yourself, but if it's different then you need a pro because the pipework and connectors will be different.

It could be worth getting your old pump repaired as it may not cost a lot - Press Teknik would give you a quote...

so, say, 400 euros for an AC pump.
say, 300 -350 (?) for a DC-AC converter and approx 1500-2000 for sufficient PV panels (much more as for the DC-DC system) to drive the system.
plus stands, cables, installation and (?) VAT.

in these cases (eg, broken pump) we suggest to install a DC pump (which has a double to triple life time as an AC pump) system, and repair the AC pump , as it does not need to run all the time any more and is used only for a vacuum- backwash "after dawn" or in low sun conditions.
both pumps are installed parallel in a "by pass" configuration.
