Knee surgery

I would be interested to hear of any recommendations, warnings, stories etc regarding any type of knee surgery undertaken here.
My partner has had a couple of knee ops over the years, due to playing a lot of football and is now paying the price. Therefore, any advice, recommendations or information regarding knee surgery would be a great help.

How long is a piece of string? What operative procedure(s) have been proposed by the orthopaedic surgeon, what condition(s) has/have been diagnosed, what tests have been completed with what findings? I regret you will not secure a sensible response from such a generally-posed enquiry. Have you sought professional, medical-based, opinion here or elsewhere? I apologise if my response appears to be obtuse, but as a retired medically qualified practitioner, I find your query equally obtuse.

Tomsteel- I give in. How long IS a piece of string?
Basically there is no cartlidge left in the knee and its bone on bone. The two previous ops were done in the UK some years ago. We know perfectly well that the first step will be to have an MRI to establish exactly what the problem is and what the treatment should be. There have been no proposed operative procedures by any orthopaedic surgeon as we have not been to one yet -hence the post!
That's why I'm asking for recommendations and information for consultants here before we decide the course of action. Is that easier for you to understand? I'm not asking for an online diagnosis, just wanting to hear from people who may have had knee surgery here.

OK Fesenjan, my recommendation would be. Seek an orthopaedic examination. This should involve X-Rays, MRI and a physical/vocal examination. Once you have the options suggested, seek a 2nd opinion with all the information and test results gleaned to date.

Much depends upon the age, general health, level of disability, pain experienced and required/expected outcome from whatever procedure your partner elects for. If, as you state, there is no hyaline cartilage on the bone ends of the tibia and femur, the choice of procedure is limited.

Thanks guys. He's away in a business trip right now but when he returns will book an appt although I would still like to hear recommendations for a consultant.
He is almost sixty and has played footie on a regular basis until his mid fifties, and pain stopped him. I fear he's way past anything physio can achieve. His knee just locks and he can't bend it and cannot put any weight on it until he rests it and gets the swelling down. It's happening more and more and is extremely painful. I half think it will be a case of a knee replacement.
After his second op many years ago he was told if he continued to play he would be crippled.
Did he stop! Did he hell.
Now it's pay back time I guess.

Fesanjan, ice packs, compression and elevation should help relieve pain. So would rest, but I expect that's not possible if he's still working. A locking knee indicates more than osteoarthritis, so maybe there is a loose body in the joint or a torn meniscus. A joint replacement would appear to be the best option, but await the outcome of investigation and 2nd opinion. Regrettably, I have no personal experience of orthopaedic surgeons here, but my wife consulted the expert at the Kyrenia Medical Centre - never again and the Kolan in Girne, impressed. The Near East University Hospital has a good reputation. However, if it were me, I would research orthopaedic surgeons specializing in knee replacement in Turkey.

I would have thought a trip back to the UK to see a specialist in the NHS would be best,..... that would be my choice.

Ah but turtle, NHS waiting times via GP referral, even if entitled to get treatment, would involve years of waiting and pain. Best go private with experienced surgeon and get relief now, not in sometime 20 whenever, if ever.

Turtle - My partner teaches here so the NHS route is out of the question as the time scale would be far too long and he needs to be able to choose the dates for treatment himself to fit around work.

I had a knee replacement done here at the end of last year. My surgeon was Cenk Soydan (tel: 0533 8608241). He was recommended to me and I would be more than happy to fully endorse that recommendation as he was excellent. He is in Lefkosia but will operate at any hospital of your choice as well as at his own clinic. He uses German titanium joints which are reputedly the best available at the present time. He would need to see an MRI of your knee. I got this done at Letam in Lefkosia who will give you the disc straight away and then went to see him as he is normally at his clinic during the afternoon.

Thank you Argoba, that is very useful information. He has an appointment with Dr Asim tomorrow at the Baskent Hospital, just to get a diagnosis. Dr Asim is the head of Orthopaedics at Lefkosa State Hospital and also works at Baskent Private Hospital. We are still looking at all options, once the treatment required is confirmed, including going to another country if necessary, as the price varies so much. May I ask how much you paid for this operation and which hospital you had this done at? My partner is a germaphobe and is worried about the cleanliness of the hospitals here.
