Re: Hip replacements.
Go home and have it done. They just do not have the expertise here that you need for such an operation. Ask my wife, she fell and broke one and it had to be redone in UK within one year. British surgeon could not believe the mess he found.

Re: Hip replacements.
Research Turkish hospitals for orthopaedic procedures. If a UK citizen, but not resident there you are not entitled to NHS care. Even if you are, GP appointment - 3 weeks, referral to specialist - 3 months, xrays, MRI, CT scan - 3 months, open waiting time - 18 months. Can you wait that long? If private route is taken, Turkey is cheaper, quicker and closer. Please let us know how you get on.

Re: Hip replacements.
My wife was diagnosed here in TRNC, flew back to UK for appointment with GP, specialist appointment scheduled in a month (another cheap flight). Operation 7 weeks later. All for a replacement shoulder last year. Can't fault the "Free" service. We would have taken the flights anyway to visit family. The NHS surgeon was aware of where we lived and was grateful for us supplying Xrays and CT Scans. If you are a pensioner the NHS must at least be considered.

Re: Hip replacements.
I can confirm from correspondence received from the UK DoH that as a non resident , albeit UK citizen having paid NI contributions for 50 years, you are NOT entitled to NHS treatment and this was confirmed by the BHC at a meeting in Girne last year. I too am a pensioner and veteran - despite successive government assurances, this meant nothing. The current MoH is proposing even more stringent checks on those seeking NHS treatment.

Have to agree with FA go home and have it done. I used a guy earlier this year in UK and was able to return here within a week.... albeit on a crutch or two . Absolutely world class and Carey's out the procedure on numerous sports people enabling them to return to their chosen sport very quickly. Pm if you want his name
They don't have the experience in the Near East ( speaking from very recent enquiries)

Re: Hip replacements.
In Turkey, I would highly recommend the Guven Hospital in Ankara. They have an office here on the left hand side of the Belapais road, almost opposite the Starling Supermarket. They will pass on to Ankara test results, MRIs and the like and get you a price. Their prices include airline tickets from Ercan to Ankara, car to meet you and this includes both the patient and another person to travel with them. Guven is a large, long established private hospital. My partner had a very major operation there earlier this year and we couldn't fault them in any way. Masses of technlogy, some of the very best surgeons and even decent food! Their price also includes a return 'check up' trip if necessary. PM me if you would like further information.

Re: Hip replacements.
A hip resurfacing in the UK at a private hospital will cost you circa £25k. You can't fly for 6 weeks after such an operation. So your stay in the UK will also have to be budgeted for. They used to do both hips at the same time but not any more.

Re: Hip replacements.
As mentioned by Scruff dog and Delarkat, I had both my hips replaced in February and haven't looked back! I would highly recommend having the op at the Apollonion in Nicosia. Another friend had one of his replaced in June and is pleased he used the same surgeon. Please feel free to contact me if you want any further info. Judy

Re: Hip replacements.
Disagree that you can't fly for 6 weeks . Can fly as soon as you are able if it's done by the McMinn centre in Birmingham. I flew after a couple of days and Derik McMinn takes all the correct precautions designed to allow people having the operation to to return home ASAP.

Re: Hip replacements.
I had a total hip replacement here in the TRNC six weeks ago, total success, couldn't be more pleased ! Walking without any sticks and totally free of pain ! I've got Dr. Huseyin Kalgay to thank for it ! I had it done in the Etik hospital in Lefkosa, in hospital for three days, excellent care and after care !

Re: Hip replacements.
Please be careful that you don't have the older 'metal on metal' resurfacing implants as they can cause cadmium metal blood poisoning. Big law suits in US & UK. Latest hip replacements/resurfacing are ceramic/plastic.
