Following the disappointments of Sunday, Nigel writes an update of the good that came out of it - the crowning of the TRNC Cricket Club as winners of the CreditWest Cup. Read on:-

TRNC Cricket Lifts The Creditwest Cup

This week, the TRNC Cricket Club were crowned Creditwest North Cyprus League winners during a special ceremony held at sponsor’s Creditwest’s Çatalköy branch. Team Manager Nigel Holman grinned as he watched the players receive their hard earned medals and Captain Danish Afridi hold up the impressive Creditwest Cup. Saying, it was great to see them smiling again after the tragedy of the school children being killed in Peshawar recently and how proud he was that in one year the Club had become a serious force in Cypriot cricket, beating all the Southern teams in the tournament.
The North didn’t get everything their own way, the Player of the Tournament went to the outstanding all-rounder from the Nicosia Cricket Club, West Indian Ywal Williams. TRNC Captain Danish Afridi agreed he was the outstanding player following match winning performances with both the bat and ball, adding he would have loved him to be in the North’s team.
Richard Boxall, secretary of the South based Cyprus Cricket Association said he was excited that it had been possible for teams from the whole of Cyprus to play in the North, following the TRNC team’s exclusion from the Buffer Zone. Boxall thought it boded very well for the future, especially as he is working with the International Cricket Council to develop the game throughout the Island.
Creditwest branch & expat manager Figen Kaymak said the bank were delighted to be sponsoring North Cyprus Cricket and it’s even better when the local side wins. Adding, having heard all about the sport from the team, she was looking forward to the new season starting in March and would come to watch some of the action.
The final game disappointingly was a damp squid with the Nicosia Cricket Club calling off the game on the morning of the match and conceding the 30 points, giving the North an unassailable 33 point league winning margin. The TRNC had agreed to the match being twice previously postponed to help their opposition, but both sides agreed it wasn’t practical to do so again. Not wanting to disappoint the growing number Cricket supporters, an attempt to quickly organise another opposition was made, but with the lack of time and the very poor condition of the pitch, cricket had to be abandoned for the day.
TRNC communications Manager, Ian Fell has announced that the next cricket action will be the spring Creditwest North Cyprus League starting on 15th March. It has been designed to develop cricket teams in the TRNC and will be only for those based North of the border. The following have already confirmed they will be taking part: Girne, Famagusta, Lefkosa, Lefke, Near East University and Taşkınköy.
