It’s coming home it’s coming home.

The Columbia match was a hard watch and they weren’t a particularly good side who were without their best player.
Sweden followed by Croatia or Russia is as good a draw as you can get to the final.
All the better sides are in the other half of the draw which should hopefully mean by the time they get to the final they’ll be all played out.
England could do this but need to win the next two games a lot easier than last night.

There is no place for generalisations about countries although I did find it strange that when England had a corner Columbia found it so hard to do a line.......

It isn't always the best team that wins the World Cup. A bit of luck and a good draw counts for a lot. Germany have limped to a couple of finals with a worse team than we've got.
You never see a team rattle off seven great performances.

1982 was a great example, Italy scrapped out of their group and Germany were pretty average throughout. England were great in the first stage and by winning the group got stuck in a hard group next round, ditto Brazil who were by far the best team.

What is worrying about last night was like back in Sven's day they seemed to sit back on a one goal lead and didn't have a plan B when the other team equalised.

For me the best news of the night was Jamie Vardy not knocking in the decisive penalty. If he had we would have had even more wall to wall coverage of his bloody wife.

For me I intend to extract every possible ounce of joy from their progress to date and revel in the best statistical prospect of England reaching the finals in my 52 year long lifetime. OK I was 19 days old the last time England reached a world cup final and went on to win that final but since then - 52 years of hurt has not stopped me dreaming.

Post 296 .. spot on and good luck to them but lacking a couple of skillful players with some flair and imagination, very workman and predictable but it takes a bit of luck and the rub of the green sometimes so who knows what will happen.

Alli keeps picking up knocks and Sterling hasn't done much. Lingard looks good in parts and Kane always capable of getting a goal. Trippier has been outstanding.
Defence look ok on the ball but concentration is key and they do have the odd wobble. Walker is a liability imo.

Thing is there isn't an outstanding team out there, a few outstanding players but no team looks that balanced. France and Brazil look the best so hopefully they have a epic quarter final and one doesn't win too easily.
The winner is going to be the side that has the least hard games so after last night we need Sweden to roll over.

Uraguay look good ...... Sterling is a poor player and Ali has no influence over the game at all as said before very workmanlike Kane is a great goalscorer but couldnt trap a bag of cement. Trippier is very good Columbia had some very good footbalingl defendesr last night ours looked very wooden by comparison.

More of a wrestling match than a quality football game, very poor refereeing and inconsistant VAR.

Try Wimbledon for better entertainment.

Agree about the wrestling but I guess if they gave a penalty via VAR every time the game would be a penalty shoot out.
As for Wimbledon, what’s entertaining about being able to pick the winner two months before it starts?

I used to cheer on any British team but now would cheer Martians to beat Scotland.

Mr b ...so right about the wrestling first it was Panama and the last night Columbia at one point a defender almost jumped on Kane;s back its getting pretty stupid now its messing the game up like to see the stats about how much time is actually spent playing football seems to be so many fouls.

I'm game.

Federer

Assuming Serena Williams isn't fit Wozniacki

Maruch and Pavic

Babos and Mladenovic

Pavic and Dabrowski (assuming they are playing together) The mixed doubles is a big ask to pick.

I agree you dont know what is.

I cheer against Scotland because I got sick of their support of anyone but England.

Yes live in North Cyprus but don't hypocritically wrap myself in the English flag like that true Scot Sean Connery and others.
Bet Sean was sweating on the independence vote after promising to move back from the Bahamas to Scotland if they got independence.

When I say back, I'm fairly sure he was living in Marbella before the Bahamas but not too sure where in Scotland that is.

That is why my ex bookie would let me back Oxford each way in the boat race.

Any of the doubles was always going to be a finger in the air pick.
Andy Murray’s brother has made the mixed doubles final again for christ’s sake.
I always remember the quote on the greatest men’s double pairing being McEnroe and Fleming. The second was McEnroe and someone else.

We had some surprises in Wimbledon for a change but I still stand by my statement it isn’t as exciting as football by a country mile.

But let’s be realistic Serena, a middle aged woman on maternity leave, still made the final. Well she had to really from 2000 a Williams sister has played in 19 of the finals. In only four out of 19 years has none of them been there.

Federer has made 11 of the last 16 finals. Assuming Djokovic wins we have had only 4 winners in 16 years.
When you get a couple of new faces, Anderson and Isner, they play the longest ever semi final which was like watching paint dry. Six and a half hours play which could be put in a highlights programme of five minutes.

But in the World Cup we have Quarter Finals missing Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Holland and Argentina.
That’s why it is the greatest game.

What a thrilling match, not knowing what would happen from one minute to the next.
Will Djokovic bounce the ball 15 times or 20 times between serves!

At least we won the Golden Boot, maybe Harry Kane can get the other in four years time, making the pair.

I only watched the last game vs Norway if I am honest. From watching that the chances that you would make the team I would say are pretty low but I would have to admit I have never seen you play football so I could be wrong. In any case given that as far as I have ever supported non national football teams, the team would be Brentford, then clearly the idea that interest is related purely to how close the players are to the absolute pinnacle of skill and ability would be hard to support At the end of the day we have an English national football team that is in to the last 4 of a world cup event. They have my support.

Stonking 2nd half too, though from my non expert eyes, the quality did start to drop as the game wore on, especially from England. Then again France has been experiencing temperatures in excess of those here. Disallowed goal. Var penalty decision, given and missed Penalty. Has me jumping up and down out of the sofa. Thoroughly enjoyable, just sad that it ended with the score it did (though deserved win by USA have to say).
