Prevention of Child Abandonment and Family Strengthening Project (FSP)
“Strong Parents - Strong Children” training

The EU-funded “Prevention of Child Abandonment and Family Strengthening Project” (FSP) held a training program called “Strong Parents Strong Children”.
The training took place at Near East University’s Department of Education on July 7-10, 2015. Some 20 participants took part in the sessions, including core care co-workers of SOS Children’s Village , which provide family based care and family strengthening to children who have lost - or are at risk of losing – parental care.
Social workers of the Social Welfare Department and other experts in the field also joined the training.
An international expert from Germany conducted four days training, in English and Turkish.
Topics included values and aims in bringing up children, needs and rights of the child, self-knowledge and self-reflection, parents as role models, expression of emotions, and problem solving skills.
The action aims to reach 60 families under FSP. Community members, children under risk of losing the care of their biological parents, and the parents will benefit from this activity.
The participants will share the knowledge with other workers in the field, who will then guide families in the Turkish Cypriot community.

“Strong Parents Strong Children” is a parent education programme of the Deutscher Kinderschutzbund (German Child Protection Agency) that addresses the needs of parents who want to improve their parental abilities. It is a selected model, used by SOS Children’s Villages all around the world.
Participants were given certificates at the end of the programme.

Buse Erzeybek Şemi, an AGP social worker who took part in the training, said:
“This course has shed light on our parental capacity work. We learnt techniques that will support our work. We also developed our teamwork skills and knowledge in the field.”

Another participant, Prevention of Social Risks Foundation (SORÖV) chairperson, Hatice Düzgün, said:
“I am happy because we previously had problems in identifying topics in parent education for our families. Thanks to this training, we learnt topics we can apply to our families. Thus, we are able to benefit women getting support under SORÖV.”

The “Prevention of Child Abandonment and Family Strengthening Project” is funded by the European Union under the Cypriot Civil Society in Action programme and implemented by SOS Children’s Village in Nicosia.
