Post by Jonnie »

Ileli very busy this morning, car park full, people doing big shops. Could it be the Chinese whispers are that there is another lockdown coming? I really really hope not.

I remember a few years ago the Branston Pickle factory burnt down in the UK in the summer which led to mass panic buying and shortages of Branston Pickle. Now I love Branston Pickle as much as the next man but I would say I probably buy 2 jars a year and consume most of my yearly intake of Branston Pickle on Boxing Day with the cold turkey.

Good old Erol wades in again. I can show you my till receipt if you like. I shop in Ileli most days. Today was busier that I have seen it since pre-lockdown, the car park was full to the point that people were parking in part of the exit gate and I had to wait outside the entrance just to get access to the car park. Most tills in use, more people in the aisles, queue for the tills.

If turkey and branston sandwiches are on offer, who knows? Best thing about Christmas is cold meat, mash and pickle on Boxing day.

I think the only reason most people buy Turkey is to eat it cold.
As I recall my Mum started cooking the Turkey around the middle of December. It generally went on before the Christmas tree went up.
Pork was another which got the special treatment. I didn't find out I actually liked pork into I was well into my 40s.

That's the main reason I won't shop in Ilelis as I can't for the life of me see why it's so popular. Its certainly attracts some of the worst parkers in the country who don't know the difference between "in" and the "out" in the car park. Touch of the Emperors New Clothes as far as I'm concerned.

That;s old bold statement as the competition is cut throat out here.
I think if ever there is a world cup and TRNC isn't invited to compete for political reasons I would say it will devalue the whole competition

With you on the pork, but we've always cooked on Christmas day (me in a management role, obviously). We always get a large turkey so it will last as long as possible. I even make a lovely turkey curry.

I liked the old shop but can't stand the new one - apart from the parking, it's just something about it. It's not very competitive pricewise either. There are so many better alternatives in my opinion, still everyone to their own.

Can't believe this, but here goes. Apparently they had had a large delivery of Cathedral Cheese, which normally retails at 39.99tl per pack and were selling it at 19.99tl. If this is the reason why outside of New Ilelis (and the surrounding area) was total bedlam then I give up. Surely no-one is that stupid?? Back in the day when Heinz Beans, HP sauce and Marmite landed in the island once a month, we were not that bonkers.!!

Like you Erol, I too love most cheeses but not enough to treble park, clutter up nearby areas and totally block up the "ins" and "outs", I bet. I wonder if anyone here is prepared to acknowledge they were one of the perpetrators??

BUT ....the fact that it is busy means that it is very popular !!! All the 'complaints' about those who don't park properly ..does any local anywhere on this Island park properly??? ((W\))

It was not that, they were just putting said cheese on display when I got there and there was no massive interest at the time. It is not related to the cheese, that would be a Chinese whisper! (Maybe)

I like Ileli for a big shop as I know I can get everything I want there plus they have a discount card which reduced my bill the other day by 27TL. For bits and bobs I shop in my local market.

What did you buy, a car? Mine seems to knock off about 6 TL on a good day.

I've discount cards for Lemar (some of the discount goes to KAR), Atakara (after 10 months I managed to get 79tl knocked off my post Christmas purchases) Ilelli (haven't been in since I got the card). Don't know why I bother really, but I guess its better than Green Shield Stamps!!

A couple of years ago, I think I found a strip of (about) five stamps in a drawer - and left them there as a memento ( as you do....)

Hadn't done a big shop in a while so had spent about 960TL. Today's discount was 10TL. There was lots of cheap cheese and the carpark had plenty of spaces.

I did an analysis of a fairly long receipt from İLELİ and came to the conclusion that the discount amounts to 5% on fresh food, and 2% on branded/packaged goods.

If they're giving you less than that - complain!

KC, only you would spend the time doing such a careful analysis on a Supermarket check out receipt. I would imagine that most people just look at the bottom two lines plus KDV. You must get out more.

" An attempt by someone intelligent to end a thread that should have died long before said "I like cheese" post. when used this way often devolves into a silly fun "non-discussion/debate"."

Well Erol, what can I say. You could of course just choose not to read it!
