Bear in mind that Cornell West comes from a life of middle class privilege and has as much idea as what it is to be an average black person in the United States as an Eskimo has.
Thomas Sowell was born in a North Carolina and his mother was a housemaid. He was bought up in Harlem from the age of 9 when his family moved there for greater opportunities. Sowell wrote that his childhood encounters with white people were so limited that he did not know that blond was a hair colour.
Sowell has a different take to West but I guess they all look the same.
