It’s always been a nonsense award. Obama got nominated 11 days after taking office. I’m assuming for unpacking

Did anyone ever find out what Obama did to get nominated after 11 days? Pick neutral curtains? Choose a peaceful new wallpaper?

I don't know and don't really care, but as human beings go Obama is well toward the top in my estimation, while the other idiot has recently defined himself as an animal.

Obama seemed a nice classy guy. Didn’t do much but still, can’t have everything. Personally my money is on that weird girl who doesn’t go to school. She’s got a limited shelf life so be nice if she got something.

Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”

Yeah must've been or got nominated for choosing peaceful tones for the redecorating scheme or the whole award is a lot of BS.
A lot of good people have won it as have a few not so good. It isn't or shouldn't be, a prize for being a nice person or else Mary Berry is liable to get a nomination
Interestingly speaking of nice people Hitler, Mao and Stalin all got nominated.

It is worth bearing in mind when they discuss Nobel Prize winning scientist's opinion on climate change quite often they are IPCC guys who won the Nobel PEACE Prize along with Al Gore. So their Nobel Prize wasn't awarded for science.
Personally I think Al Gore should've won for inventing the internet rather than his amusing film.

You think the internet has made the world a more peaceful place ? Can not say I am seeing it myself to be honest ?

I think many of the awards have been given for good works that I wouldn't have necessarily said added much to making the world a more peaceful place. But I was being ironic. Between the two of us, despite his claims, I don't actually think that Al invented the internet.

Yeah I was aware of that. At the risk of being once more shot down in flames for going off topic, it remains one of the highlights of my life to have had the opportunity to have met and chatted with one of the three 'inventors' (I would say architects) off the internet, Vint Cerf. I still have his business card in my wallet today, some 25 odd years after he handed it to me.

They say never meet your heroes I’ve been disappointed a few times.
Btw if he hasn’t called you or picked up in 25 years....... ;)

It was Tim Berners-Lee who invented it as an educational tool. Didn't take long for the vultures to mess it up.

TBF it's the people that intended to make money out of it that ensured it got into our homes to enable us to video call grandchildren and nice stuff like that. As with anything there are ups and downs and actions have counter actions. If it had stayed an educational tool it would probably have stayed very expensive.
God bless the market economy.

Sorry to go all nit picky on you

Tim Berners-Lee is widely regarded to have been the inventor of the world wide web. The www is not the same things as the internet. It post dates the internet and runs over it.

BoB Khan and Vint Cerf created the protocols (rules) that 'are' the internet back in the 70's. Working to a brief from the US military to try and design a network protocol that would still allow communication in the event of a nuclear war.

Is that still allowed ? It is so hard to know when all the information posts here are swamped with off topic arguments.

I never got to meet Sir Tim Berners-Lee but he did, way back in the day, endorse a campaign group I was a founder member of and wrote a short piece for us to put on our website that was later quoted by the Member of Parliament for Northavon, Steve Webb, in a House of Commons debate in June 1999. Meeting Vint Cerf as a fellow speaker (he keynote, me some tiny little side room) at a conference in the US was also a result of this campaigning and as I already said remains for me one of the highlight experiences of my life to date.

See money makers and war makers. Throw in a few porn barons and the convenience of the internet is in everyone's homes.
Blessed be the militaristic, capitalist pornographers.

The 'sex' industry have always been drivers for and early adopters of new technologies. From print, to photography, to cinema, to telephony, to video recorders and on. You could argue from first painting in caves as far as that was a technology. The cores of the same systems you use to today to pay your electricity bill online were first developed by people working out how to charge for access to 'saucy' content over the internet.

The law of unintended consequences ? In the case of those setting the brief that is, not I suspect of those trying to create it ;) The same features that makes the internet so much more resilient to nuclear attack than all previous network protocols are what also makes it so much more resilient to censorship than all previous network protocols.
