Possibly because a lot of us 'oldies' wear varifocals with HRI lenses and a variety of coatings ;)

Sorry I can't help!

Got my first pair of the sort you wanted in Canada - 68 years ago - and the lasted me for 2 years, never looked back - lol. Since then I have been on all sorts of lens's and frames and patches but never the simple things you want again, sorry wish I could help as it would be a lot cheaper for me.

The reason for my original post was that I was quoted over £550, for a pair of vari focals with reacterlight type lenses,. The frames only cost 550 tl or less than £60, so why does it cost £500 to make two lenses?

Akay dont do Varifocal Kodak lenses anymore. The "similar" brand is, imho, inferior. Zeiss are well over £600.

Tutor4u, I have been wearing glasses for many years, I have bought them in different countries world wide and of course as my sight has deteriorated the prescriptions have changed but so have the manufacture of lenses, now much thinner and lighter than the bottle bottoms I started with! Frames are normally the expensive things these days, for myself I always buy titanium which is “costly” but worth the extra. I have not bought new glasses in the North for a good few years as the quality and in particular, the fitting is poor.

Last pair costs were: Variofocal multiview pnx trans grey - 285 Euros a pair - antiscratch 19 Euros - antireflection 39 Euros - rimless glazing 19 Euros. Used existing frames so total price was 362 Euros. £500 for a pair of lenses is way too much, look for another place sir!

Sad part is now we can no longer go South I will have to wait for my optician to come North!

My wife had a new pair of prescription (from UK) glasses from Akay Optik last month, reactalight lenses, all cost 950tl.
Took three quarters of an hour, left the shop with them, very good service.

Bogaz58, I can understand that speed and the price as well. Sadly when I need new spectacles my lenses take - on average - two weeks to produce as they can not be ground/cut to my particular prescription in the TRNC. Even when I get them from the RoC, which can produce them, they take around 10 days. Simple prescription lenses are held by most optical outlets but difficult prescriptions have to be produced outside of the TRNC at this time. The ones I used to get in the TRNC always came from Turkey, some were very good and some were not, the ones I have been buying from the RoC have always been top quality, thinnest, lightest, lenses - you (well, me) get what you pay for I am afraid.

Additionally, if you have a "difficult" prescription and in particular if you want varifocal lenses, the fitting in the frames and getting the correct eye line points are critical. Here, I have never been happy with a short attendant putting dots on my lenses to indicate the correct centres when I have had to bend down to their height whilst they guess where the centre of my vision is! It has been luck of the draw in most cases and in some cases I have been able to see perfectly well through one eye but not been able to focus through the other as the centres are out of line. The last time I tried here - at a very reputable outlet - they got it well wrong but when I went back to complain they told me that my prescription had changed and the lenses I had purchased were perfect - never went back again!

Please note that I am not complaining here, in all the years I have been wearing spectacles I have seen it all (no pun intended) and because my sight is very valuable to me I only go for the very best I can find. It is strange how times change, in the late 60's/early 70's I used to buy spectacles in Limassol for around £25 a pair, ready in 24 hours, absolutely the best I have ever had, maybe he ground them by hand in the back of his shop - who knows but they were magic - sadly no longer there. I have had Specsavers lenses in the UK as well but they still took 10 days to produce.

Since having cataracts done a couple of years back I only use cheapy glasses to read. However the last pair of specs I had from Akay Optic, varifocal and all the rest of whistles a bells, and the lenses had be sent from Switzerland and ground again at A.O in Istanbul but they were never right. I went back to Akay in Lefkosa at least 5 times and they tweaked here and there but were pretty dreadful. In the end they blamed the problems on the Eye Specialist and said that his prescription was incorrect. All in all it took 4 weeks, cost a mint and I stuck them in a drawer somewhere barely worn. I was told by the Specialist that I would have had better treatment if I had gone down South!!!

That's a much better response from the forum, Its seems to be that some people try to sell you the most expensive solution, irrespective of the simple fact it is not what you want. I could easy pay £550 and not bat an eyelid. BUT it's the principle of being ripped off, its beyond belief that 2 lenses cost £500. Solution will be, when I next go to UK, new specs will appear, until then my dog is being trained to guide. (8))

Well, you did ask a very specific question in your first post, and as far as I can see, it has still not been answered :)

Very true I suspect that most folk either got their specs from the South or UK. So they have no way to answer my original post.

I can recommend a place but it is in the South - eye tests are free and the service is first rate. A 10 min walk from the Ledra st crossing point - if we ever get the chance of crossing again! Easy, down to the bus station and turn right on the main road, up to next crossing point (watch the traffic light controlled traffic from your right) hop across there and the next road and turn right and it's 50 mtrs up on you left hand side right on the corner - or you can drive and there is a pay car park less than 200 mtrs away and an easy walk from there.

I appreciate that the test is done by a separate body not the optician who provides the glasses

This gives me cause for concern as the tester is blamed by the frame supplier and visa versa

UK suppliers vary greatly in price total ridiculous variations £200 - £800

Vari-foculs photo-chromic all the coatings rimless £200 ASDA

Sent the wife there got the glasses home could not see the house clearly across the street glasses returned money refunded

Then went to Specsavers £300 rimless again glasses fell apart literally returned and refunded

Finally she broke a pair in Cyprus crossed the border at Ledra Palace replacement glasses within the week perfect

Replaced the last year AA opticians in Nicosia

Sorry tutor4u, if none of us seem to have been able to have help you, obviously our experiences vary in price and longevity of the specs. I think you're either going to have to go and knock on a few doors, or wait until UK or down South open up. Single lens shouldn't be costly though.

Wanderer, perfect because both Pars and his brother do the whole thing - soup to nuts - eye test, frame selection, fitting, glazing, customer care all by the same guy. Would not go anywhere else but may have to find another way of meeting up with Pars if border restrictions stay the same as now post Brexit!
