Driving Licence Renewal Delay
Just in case anyone is thinking of renewing their driving licence in the near future:
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has announced that, for a brief time period, driving tests cannot be arranged and existing driving licence renewals cannot be made.
A statement by the ministry said that these necessary measures were taken to avoid any congestion and backlog that may arise due to delays in the ministry’s ability to process these demands, and that steps will be taken to avoid any unfair treatment.
The delay has arisen because of election bans, a government vacuum and the inability of the Council of Ministers to meet.

I don't know but you can tax a car online using this link https://online-vergi.gov.ct.tr/gvdos_on ... rumadi=bub
Passport number must be the one used when the car was purchased, the number should be preceded by the letter P and it should be the passport of the first named person on the log book, if there is more than one name on log book. Generally the date of registration is the one printed on the front of the log book but can be a day either side. Any problems contact them via the email address on the page above.

Re: Driving Licence Renewal Delay
If your licence runs out during this period, are they issuing a paper to state you are waiting to renew or you just can not drive?
I suppose the insurance company it is worth checking with that you are covered to drive with an expired licence through no fault of your own.

This thread originated a month ago so the situation may well have changed by now. Worth calling in and asking if you can renew.

Might be best to ask the traffic police at Girne Station. I had a quick look through the news stories and latest one I found was about the driving schools holding a protest on 7th December because driving tests and licence renewals were still on hold. Perhaps now there's a new government there may be some movement soon...

Re: Driving Licence Renewal Delay
OK that puts a different slant on it I guess. So as suggested above maybe best to ask the Traffic Police then. Even than I would think that answer may differ dependent on who you ask. Not a lot of help I realise but it isn't as though you are not entitled to drive because you do not have a licence. If the powers that be make it impossible for you to renew then it would be harsh for you to be punished but I seriously doubt you will get a 100% answer that you can rely on.snd1966 wrote: ↑Wed 16 Dec 2020 12:38 pmMy colleague went last week and just told no . I still think it wouldn't hurt to inform your Insurance Co., what the situation is, rather than they find out after the event, as it were.

Re: Driving Licence Renewal Delay
Ah so much easier if a paper was given but driving without a licence and having an accident is my boss's nightmare.
I assumed as this has been ongoing since November, maybe a British expat may have an expired licence by now and wondered if the people she spoke to had just been rude by saying No and go.

Re: Driving Licence Renewal Delay
The govt. really need to get cracking on with this pronto. Mine is not expired yet, but will early next year, and I am becoming concerned, so can totally understand those who are in the position of an expired licence. I think I shall be asking my insurance company what the position is. I do have a UK driving licence still in force, but have lived here way too long to be driving on that here now.

I believe its down to.the new licence which will look more in line with other countries. Hopefully still having over 8 years before my current one expires it will just be replaced and no driving test or fee will have to be taken.

I do like your optimism.
No matter what, they will have to get their finger out and get it sorted.

Re: Driving Licence Renewal Delay
I vaguely remember reading something about that in the local press a while back, particularly about over 70's being tested, which is no bad thing, however that was under the last government. We will have to wait and see what this new lot come out with.

Re: Driving Licence Renewal Delay
Luckily we renewed ours at the end of October and for five years which will put me over the 70. I think the most galling thing about all of this is that considering the standard of driving here and the fact that we have a UK driving licence from when we actually took lessons, a test and have quite a bit of experience that our standard of driving is even called into question. Yes I know there are some appalling Ex Pat drivers of course but even on years of driving in the UK I have seldom if ever seen anything as bad as I see here on an almost daily basis.
Sorry for taking it off topic and not wanting to start another thread on driving standards. It is just the thought that if many of the drivers we see daily ever took a lesson or a test in the UK they would fail dismally and yet here are some of you guys having to sort out this fiasco.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced that the procedures regarding the license have started again. On the other hand, a decision was made regarding the extension of the driving licenses of those whose validity period expired between 15 March 2020 and 28 February 2021 without any charge until February 28.
In the statement made by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, it was announced that the license renewal and driving license exam procedures have restarted as of today. The decision of the Council of Ministers has also been made to extend the validity of the student license between 15 March 2020 and 28 February 2021 without any charge until February 28, 2021. In the statement made by the Ministry, the following statements were made: "License renewal and driving license exam procedures have been restarted as of December 22, 2020, with the regulations made in the Council of Ministers yesterday. The Council of Ministers also decided that the validity period of the student license expires or will expire between 15 March 2020 and 28 February 2021, to extend their driving licenses without any charge until 28 February 2021. As it will be remembered, as of November 1, 2020, the Driver's License Renewal Unit was closed due to the deficiencies in the implementation of the regulations, so driver schools and citizens suffered. In this process, necessary precautions were taken to avoid congestion in the cashiers of the Driving License Renewal Unit and to prevent further victimization of driver schools and citizens. It is respectfully announced to the public.
