Subject of thread has been edited ... mainly because the fire has thankfully been extinguished.

See post 6 for link about the helicopter (or rather lack of it) situation.

This is because the roads are clogged with traffic
Or more accurately, the narrow roads are being clogged with traffic, making it difficult for the fire brigade.

Are they clogged with genuine traffic or rubber neckers. When we had our fire up here they had to block two roads off in order for fire personnel and police to get here. Rubber neckers were appearing as if by magic.

According to the report, it is indeed rubber neckers.

Apparently the fire is "under control" now ...

Thank goodness for that. The army told us to pack all our valuables, legal paperwork and three dogs in to cars and be ready to drive off when then told us to. Fortunately the fire was checked about 50 yards away, with the help of helicopters from Turkey, together with spotters who stayed up all night and next day. Wouldn't wish that experience on my worst enemy.

Unfortunately for today's fire in Karşıyaka, there were no special fire helicopters available - According to the report, TRNC does have one "fire helicopter", but it is currently in Turkey helping with the more serious fires there.

I have edited the subject of this thread, because I thought the helicopter (or lack of it) situation might interest some of you.

My opinion is the decision to send the helicopter to Turkey was the right one ... after all, the fires there are far more serious.

There's another bad fire in Mersinlik (between Tatlısu and Kaplıca). It apparently started at around 5am this morning. Take a look at the photos on the link :( ... I presume they are of the said fire ... maybe not.

Gündemkıbrıs has now altered the place in the report. It wasn't Mersinlik - it was closer to Geçitkale ... and aparently the fire is now thankfully under control

So, besides the special helicopter, what do people think of today's announcement (see source1) that the TRNC is tomorrow sending a team, along with vehicles and equipment to help (quoting) "our Turkey" deal with the terrible fires they're experiencing.

I should add that the (see source2) British bases here have, a couple of days ago, agreed to help TRNC in the event of a fire similar to the one in Karşıyaka ... some of you might say that's just as well considering TRNC's special fire helicopter and (some) vehicles will be in Turkey ...

Careful. Don’t mention the fires in Turkey…

English translation from Facebook…
RTÜK member Ilhan Taşççı accused President of threatening TV managers Abubekir Şahin. According to Taşçı, the Falcon sent a message ′′ Don't show the fires or I will punish you the most severe punishment ′’

I love these translations ... the surname "Şahin" means falcon - that's why we hear about the bird of prey in this translation :)

As for what Taşçı said, it just shows you the control that the AKP has (or at least tries to have) over the media :(
