Re: Olive picking
I'm sure it must have been a while back. Olive oil factories are open. I have collected mine and produced oil yesterday.

Re: Olive picking
Thank you Soner, my trees still have green olives with a few black ones. Should I wait until they are black before picking?

Re: Olive picking
No, pick them now, they should be ready for olive oil. I'm guessing they are in your garden and you have been watering them. If in the fields, then, some are waiting/hoping for one more rainfall.

Re: Olive picking
Yes they are in the garden but haven’t watered them. In previous years when we watered them they had a lot of leaves fall.

Re: Olive picking
The more you water them in the summer (and just before) the better. A good watering once a week is what I do, and I mean a really good watering.
Have you tried squeezing one of the green olives? If oil squirts out then definitely ready.

Re: Olive picking
Sorry, do not know answer to this, usually if busy year they will definitely open, this year has not been that good. If you have picked your olives and can't take to the press for a few days, then spread them out on a sheet in a dry place and turn them every day with a rake. This way they will not mould, also, some people do this to reduce weight from water content to get more for their money.

Re: Olive picking
Sorry do not know minimum weight but if you have something like 4 kilos, most factories will take and give you a bottle of olive oil. I think it works out at approx 4-6 kilos of olives (depending on type of olive) to 1 litre of oil.

Re: Olive picking
I don't know about most factories as I only go to the one in Karsiyaka. There is no minimum weight for your olives, only a minimum charge of 70 tl for processing (3.50 tl per litre). I brought in 37 kg of olives last Wednesday and was advised to exchange them for olive oil (1 litre for every 7 kg of olives). I wanted the oil from my own olives but was surprised that I only got 4 litres of oil. That may be why it is said to wait until after the first rain to allow the olives to plump up and perhaps produce more oil. I think that is what most people are doing as the factory was not busy at the time. You can also buy olive oil for 40 tl a litre.

Re: Olive picking
I took mine to Bardak Gecitkale on Sunday... 70 kilos produced 14 litres of oil, at a cost of 60tl for the whole process.
There is no minimum weight, but the minimum charge is 50tl for 50kg.

Re: Olive picking
Wow, that’s a lot of olive oil for 60t. How many olive trees do you have?
What is the quality like?

Re: Olive picking
Do not bring bottles as they won't be able to fill them as I found out a couple of years ago. Bring a suitable container as most people do or the factory can sell you one e.g. a 10 litre plastic container is 20 tl

Re: Olive picking
Would be awesome to sample some of your home grown oil thanks.
Would like to think we could pop over at Christmas at some point but if we went to north Cyprus instead of England, I think we would be in trouble from our family, so could well be in the new year. Will see how things pan out though.
