Re: Beer prices
Apparently there was a rush to buy alcohol yesterday after the announcement and shelves were emptied. Some shops emptied the shelves themselves in anticipation of the increase. I had visions of folk with trolley load of booze, going to be some great hangovers!

Asked why as it's old stock, Cyprus shrug.
Pay or give it up. Lol.

Re: Beer prices
This old chestnut.
What wholesale price will the retailer have to pay to replace this old stock once they sell it ? They will have to replace it at the new price is the answer. Now if the retailer was going to call it a day and shut up shop and will never be re ordering new stock at the new price, then fair enough they should sell the old stock at the old price. However if they are going to continue retailing then it is in my humble opinion unfair and unrealistic to expect them to sell at the old price. It would mean that the amount they get for these sales even after their normal mark up is not enough to replace that stock to the same level. So not only no profit if they just replace the same amount of stock but a considerable capital loss to them.

Re: Beer prices
The tax is payable when the alcohol leaves the bonded warehouse. Not at point of sale.
Therefore existing stock has not been taxed at higher level.
Some shops here limiting amount of old stock you can buy. Which I think is fair

Agreed, this tax hike is ludicrous. Businesses have had a hard enough time over the past two years as it is and now this. I read the Restauranters association weren't happy, lets hope they protest and something is done.

I read in one of the papers, that this tax on luxury goods (alcohol and cigs) is to help out Kibtek. How that equates I have no idea. Just get those with large debts to pay their bills. Switch them off until they cough up.

I mean anyone with large debts, no matter who they are. At the least, get on to some kind of monthly payment plan if they can't pay their debt in full.kibsolar1999 wrote: ↑Fri 25 Mar 2022 8:21 am

Re: Beer prices
Back to using the old barman’s trick then, first rum and coke as normal, second one with half the rum, all the rest just dip the glass rim into the rum and add the coke! Has been used on gin & tonic and vodka & orange for years - lol.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Well done Roadhouse by not increasing prices for now. Can't say the same about others who have already hiked them.

I thought the topic of discussion was 'beer prices' not the merit of where tobacco prices should be!!!

Re: Beer prices
Apparenently my friend said beer prices in (middle uk area) £4.50 sterling a pint. Ok i drink a bottle of carlsberg may be £1.30 a bottle. Still cheaper than uk. If i cannot afford to go out 4 days a week. Ok... i go out 3 days a week. I will not drink at home because it is too easy to drink too much.

There's already talk about re-evaluating the tax on alcohol, read it in a few of the newspapers yesterday.
