Hello crossing from the south to the north if you are an EU citizen can you just show an id card or do they need to see a passport ?

Up to you, but as an Eurpean I always use my ID.
Never ever faced a problem crossing the borders
entering or leaving the island via Ercan or Larnaca.

What exactly do you refer to as your ID and if possible could you let us know your nationality. Fine if you don't want to.
