Hi

We have a wood burner that we have never used - it was in the in the house before we bought it - we keep seeing flakes or stones dust and so on come down the back of the burner in the Lounge - I've block the chimney for it with wire mesh - anyone any idea what it could be or how to clean it out?

Sounds like to to they never installed a metal flue. If the burner just empties into what is probably an unfinshed chimney you could end up with carbon monoxide poisoning.
