Excellent!

Much better than my abortive attempt

I think that I'll give it a go.

It occurs to me that the second method would be a means of providing a clean water supply for stray dogs and cats, as well as your own pets...

Hi Keithcaley,

The first option will find a new use for out of date Bidons.
You may not get your deposit back, but far more useful,
for years to come

ps You could just drill a small hole in the base,
at the depth required, if you can seal (cling film + rubber band) the top?

Thanks for that thought Navek - If I can manage to remove the top seal in one piece, I do save them, so I should have a few knocking about that would make a good seal, and as you say, a simple 1" hole near the bottom would do the trick. I think that there are a couple of old 19Ltr bottles somewhere, as long as they're water-tight.

Could be suitable for use outside some of the pet-friendly supermarkets, as long as we can find suitable bowls which don't appeal to light-fingered passers-by... - Some of the Supermarkets do put out small water bowls, but they always seem empty!
