Feel good movie suggestions to get you through lockdown

Need some suggestions. Wife and I have had two weeks of sat on the couch watching tv, tv and more tv.

So far watched;

The gentlemen (very good guy ritchie movie)
Dances with wolves (outstanding, not how I remembered it)
The Secret Garden (great story set in a pandemic)
Lock stock and two smoking barrels (aged but still decent)
Pearl harbour (better than the IMDb rating it gets)
Little women (not my thing but wife enjoyed)
Karate kid original (brilliant still)

Ps. Watched The English player (tv series about how football was introduced into Uk... excellent)

Any more suggestions to get me through the weekend?

Lots of good suggestions for me to try there thanks.

I watched the ford v Ferrari (le mans) movie. Was excellent.

Watched father of the bride (Steve Martin) last night. Was ok. Perhaps I wasn’t in the mood?

I think you all should of contacted BBC and ITV, Easter must of been bad enough without the TV they showed to keep people entertained
Ok Harrison Ford and the raider of the lost ark is a great sequel of films but made in 1981 and the last one 2008, surely at special times when families should get together the Television should be more up to date.
Its a shame while digging through the archives they don't dig out tomorrow's world, Dad's Army and many others showing the great british sense of humour.
Films the mechanic with Charles Bronson, especially the car chase, you know those old cars don't have breaking systems like today's vehicles.

I stopped relying on BBC / ITV for up-to-date TV a long time ago.

I use a combination of IPTV / Netflix / Apple and Amazon. Got The complete Dad’s Army boxset on Apple a couple of years ago for about £10. Love all the old comedy stuff.

Yes. Sorry. I think it is by the same people who did Downton Abbey. Was very good tv.

Back to the Future trilogy - all day long,

Totally agree, fave films of all time!

Very current, Apollo 13. As I write this, 50 years ago, they were approaching re-entry and splashdown, all the time wondering if the heatshield had been damaged in the explosion. A true story of a team pulling together.

Could you imagine what it would be like with out gotcha press these days!

I must not have really understood the original question. I'm sure some of the recommendations are terrific movies, but "feel good"? I'm not so sure,

Just watched “The Leisure Seeker” on Netflix. Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland. A beautiful film: funny and very moving at the same time.

But be warned: we both ended up with damp eyes at the end!

Watched Apollo 13 last night. Never seen it before, really enjoyed it. Also watched the zookeepers wife and cold mountain today. Really good watches.

And yes Sophie... it’s digressed into good movies rather than feel good movies.

Keep them coming, I’m working though the movies mentioned... shame I’m back at work tomorrow. Will only be able to watch on the evening!

For me (and my wife) feel good movies always come with a large dollop of redemption.

One such movie I am a big fan off in this vein that is less known than many would be 'The Intouchables' (not to be confused with the untouchables , staring sean connery). It is 'foreign language' (french) but well worth a watch imo. IMDB entry for the film is here but if you intend to watch it I would not look at that before watching it. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675434/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Against all international copyright I have put a copy up on the net that can be downloaded along with a separate 'srt' format subtitles file using the following links. All I ask should you do so, please do not stream it, which may happen if you just click on the link below. Instead if you 'right click' and select 'save link as' (in windows land, there will be equivalents in apple land, or linux land etc ) it would be most appreciated. If you download the movie file and the subtitle file to the same place at your local end then with a player like VLC all should be dandy. The video file is about 1.2GB in size. If you want to download it in 'off peak' hours that would be good too.

subtitle file (right click on link below and select 'save file as')
http://visionmatters.co.uk/movies/The.Intouchables.srt

movie file (right click on link below and select 'save file as')
http://visionmatters.co.uk/movies/The.Intouchables.mp4

Going off at a bit of a tangent, we could set up a kibkom online 'movie club' where a given film is chosen / voted for each week, anyone who wants in to the club watches it and then we all discuss it ?

A film which is an oldie but sunk without a trace at the box office is Diggstown or Midnight Sting as it is sometimes titled.
It's got James Wood, Louis Gossett Jr and Bruce Dern in it.
Similar to the Sting but no one seems to have ever watched it. Everyone I have recommended it to down the years loves it.

Despite winning best oscar a couple of years ago not many seemed to have seen Green Book which is well worth a go.

As far as series are concerned one that again is an oldie but goldie which many didn't catch is The Worst Week of My Life. There were 3 series of it and it's hilarious. Similar to the film Meet The Parents but much funnier.

An Idiot Abroad is always worth a watch as possibly one of the funniest series ever made

Talking of which, i don't know if Sky Arts is available in TRNC but if it is, the very beautiful goddess that is Madeline Kahn, is the subject of this weeks' Comedy Legends, i think it is either Tuesday or Wednesday at, wait for it though, 1am (UK time).

Talking of Young...

Young Sherlock Holmes. One of Nicholas Rowe's earliest films. I think he's in the BBC's Belgravia at the moment. I knew him and his farther the late Honourable Andrew Rowe, lived in Bearstead, Maidstone, next door to Lewis Collins. Not that that has anything to do with it lol.

I really like hard hitting action movies and as such the Ludlum-based Bourne series is always re-watchable.

As are

Mission Impossible

The Bourne films are superb, I always struggle with Tom Cruise action films because I find it difficult to buy into 5'2 in heels Tom fighting 5 people at a time!

Never seen Nebraska. I always categorise those films as made to win Oscars rather than entertain. On that subjext Daniel Day Lewis has won 3 Oscars and has yet to make a film I've enjoyed. I appreciate he is a brilliant actor and if he was given the lead part in the life of an orange I appreciate he would research it by living in a fruit bowl for 3 months. I would come out of the film thinking I have never seen someone so convincing as an orange and then realise that I have spent 2 hours watching a film about a piece of fruit.

User Reviews - Beautiful, hilarious, poignant film.
Alexander Payne is one director who marches to the beat of his own drummer,
films in Nebraska,
uses black and white,
and casts some parts locally to get the correct flavor.
He doesn't miss a note.

Definitely worth watching.

Sounds like it's not a feel good movie... like The Deerhunter is not a feel good movie. No matter how well done, directed acted cinematography etc.

For it to be a feel good movie I want to feel uplifted not thank God that's over....

Recently watched all the Donnie Yen - Ipman films - if you like Kung Fu set in context of China's colonial past they are good viewing.

Hmmm the word poignant always gives me cause for alarm.

It's not up there with nihilistic, cathartic, post-modern, neo-realism, Introspective, oeuvre or denouement but its a red flag.

Generally whenever I see those words in a film review I'm thinking;

1) It's going to be in a foreign language, Swedish if all the key words feature in the review, or enough parts of it are foreign so I'm going to have to sit 8 inches away from the TV for 3+ hours.

2) It might be silent or three quarters of it are, and those bits with dialogue sound as if they have been filmed through a bucket with the inevitable mumbling method actors

3) Beautiful scenery which we will see in a panoramic shot while the lead actor spends 20 minutes walking across the terrain to wipe his brow at the end of it. Then 40 minutes while he fishes. Or no scenery, where someone sits in their back yard reciting 40 minute monologues that add zero to the non existent plot.

4) Daniel Day Lewis is in it

5) It will last a minimum of 3 hours and i'll be terrified to go to the loo during it in case I miss the 30 seconds which got this drivel such rave reviews.

6) After seeing it I will have to re-read all the reviews to find out what the bloody hell it was about.

7) It will win every award going but even with that boost it will make about fifty grand at the box office mainly generated from film critics.

Loved Laurel and Hardy and will always watch even them now, amazing to think that some are nearly 100 years old, Charlie Chaplin I never got. I can appreciate he was a genius but not for me

I really like hard hitting action movies and as such the Ludlum-based Bourne series is always re-watchable.

As are

Jack Reacher
Mission Impossible
Salt
The Bourne films are superb, I always struggle with Tom Cruise action films because I find it difficult to buy into 5'2 in heels Tom fighting 5 people at a time!
Cannot stand Tom Cruise movies. Something about him. Plenty more good suggestions on this thread for me to try, should keep me out of trouble this weekend. Thanks

The irishman 3 hours but great film
I was a bit disappointed in it tbh.
I think Pacino and DeNiro have been more wrapped up in their performances over the last 20 years than making a good film. Apart from the first Meet The Parents film I'm struggling to think of film of either that I've really liked for a long time.
