Ercan is open. You can fly internationally but not direct. All flights via Turkey

Re: Ercan airport.
Morning All. To add to the above. For many months now I have been communicating with my UK MP badgering her about not only her support but government support for the above.
I have had a reply from her with a letter from Anthony Browne MP, minister for Decarbonisation, Aviation and Technology.
It states. The UK recognises only one Cypriot state- The Republic of Cyprus-and only one government as the sole legitimate government. Under the Chicago Convention, only the Republic of Cyprus may designate Ercan as an international customs airport and grant permission for flights to operate from within its territory. It has not done this so, therefore, no direct air service between the North of Cyprus and the UK can take place.
There is a lot more and I am willing to share this if someone can tell me how to get the email on to this website. Tanky

Dear Caroline,
Thank you for your email of 20 March to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on behalf of your constituents, regarding direct flights from the UK to the north of Cyprus. As your enquiry relates to aviation, your email has been passed to this Department, and I am replying as the Minister for Decarbonisation, Aviation and Technology.
The UK recognises only one Cypriot state – the Republic of Cyprus – and only one government as the sole legitimate government. Under the Chicago Convention, only the Republic of Cyprus may designate Ercan as an international customs airport and grant permission for flights to operate from within its territory. It has not done so, therefore, no direct air services between the north of Cyprus and the UK can take place.
Whilst the Department recognises the inconvenience caused to passengers by the current situation with air travel between the north of Cyprus and the UK, to do otherwise would be contrary to the UK’s obligations under the Chicago Convention. This was confirmed by the High Court, which ruled in 2009 (Kibris Türk Hava Yollari v Secretary of State for Transport) that allowing direct flights would breach our international legal obligations. This ruling was endorsed by the Court of Appeal in 2010.
I hope this reply is helpful.
Yours ever,
ANTHONY BROWNE MP
