FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis)

Has anyone's cat been affected by this? It's a strain of Coronavirus, hence dubbed "Cat Covid". I ask as it was reported in the UK Daily Star that it has claimed many thousands of cats lives in Cyprus. Being a cat lover / animal lover in general i am rather concerned as we have about 11 cats with us when we come "home" to Esentepe and i would hate for any of them to fall victim. Nothing we can do from the UK anyway.

Our neighbours pet who was a mature cat was diagnosed with it about 6 months ago. We have had a few garden cats with snotty noses but it was only a kitten who succumbed to similar symptoms. At the moment all seem well and numbers are still in double figures that visit for breakfast and dinner.

Last November we took on a stray kitten from one of the many found dumped here in Karmi village.
He did ok until he started with eye trouble in the January. Drops eased that somewhat but by end of February the vet did blood tests and informed us that he probably had FIP (dry type).
Since then he has had various strengths of regular steroid doses but has gradually deteriorated and now has very unsteady back legs and has urinary and bowel incontinence. Apparently the net stage could involve seizures
It's very distressing to have a pet with FIP!

So it doesn't seem as bad as The Daily Star make out fortunately. Hopefully yours wil stay in double figures snd.

jay though, it sounds like the poor thing has no quality of life. If it's distressing for you to watch you and it would be for us too, had you considered Euthanasia rather than waiting for "the next step"?

Oh his quality of life is still ok. The incontinence isn't constant by any means.....just the odd little "accident" every now and then especially since last increase in steroid dose. His appetite is still good and he likes to join in the stealing from our other cats foodbowls. Although his back legs are a bit wobbly, he gets around fine and last night was leaping about the terrace catching gicadas. We find it distressing mainly because he is such a handsome cat of great character but we know he will never develop into a strong cat as have all of our current cat family (5)
I can assure you that as soon as we know he is in any sort of pain and has no quality of life as such then we will not hesitate to have him "put to sleep".

Ah bless, thank you jay, a much better outlook than i had thought. If he's happy that's the main thing and he's obviously in the right place.
