Thanks, Mollie. We put the alarm on and had a belting view of the space station as it zoomed across the night sky. Best view we've ever had of said beast.

Re: Space station
Comet Neowise should also be visible tonight from about 10.20 until 11.20.
Look towards North west just above the horizon. From the east side of Girne, look towards Girne but slightly out to sea.

In the UK at present but I have Stellarium installed and location/time set for Karsiyaka; at time of posting Neowise is just above the horizon at NNW in the simulation.
If I'm lucky and the sky stays clear, I might be able to eyeball it for real!

Re: Space station
ISS very clear tonight.
I can't see Comet Neowise yet from up here in Karmi/Karaman....too much light pollution from coastal development West of Girne.
Hopefully will see it as height above NW horizon increases in the next few days?

So the times above for tonight are they for the Comet or the space station? Would love to see the comet.

Re: Space station
That is quite surprising as about 20 of us got a good view of it at Khan's in Catalkoy and the sky couldn't have been that different.
I looked with interest but did not see it, which was a shame.
Maybe Khan's hallucinogenic vindaloo impaired not only your visual perception but enhanced your bitter vitriol.
NOW JUST SHUT IT

Yes. I would suppose that as sunset gets earlier, then the reflection on the space station's panels etc will diminish as it crosses the night sky?sausage and pash wrote: ↑Sat 01 Aug 2020 7:36 pmWatched as it came from over girne wsy then over çhatolköy the light went out??

Re: Space station
It really depends on your location - the station is due to appear at 9:32 in the WNW direction, and disappear in the SW direction.
That means that if you are anywhere in 'Kyrenia District' on the North coast, it will appear out over the sea, somewhat to your left hand side when facing the sea, and disappear over the coastal mountain range - somewhat to your right when facing the mountains.
A viewer in Lefkoşa or Dipkarpaz or Gazimağusa would see things rather differently ...

Just run Stellarium (loc. near Sardunya, time 21:30 onwards) and left/right appear to be wrong way round? Also, for info, reflected light from ISS cuts out shortly before reaching the mountains - of course, this is all from a simulation....

Re: Space station
Jofra, thank you for pointing that out, I've edited the left /right references
If you ever need to ask me for directions, it would probably be best to do the exact opposite to whatever I say!

They are all over the place if you are lucky enough to see one. No action replays so don't blink. Tonight is supposed to be peak night, I believe. We lay on sunbeds looking East from Karsiyaka to Girne and South East. They are still few and far between, even tonight, it's not like fireworks night that's for sure.

Re: Space station
Don't forget that Mars will shine the brightest it has since 2003 tonight.
NASA say: “Simply go outside and look up and, depending on your local weather and lighting conditions, you should be able to see Mars. While Mars should be visible with the naked eye, a telescope could come in handy to help you see more details of the red planet. The Red Planet comes close enough for exceptional viewing only once or twice every 15 or 17 years.”
It rises from the east at 1655 tonight and is best viewed at about 0100.

Re: Space station
Thanks for the heads uo - pun intended.
I watched the ISS pass over Karşıyaka this evening.
About a minute befote, say 19:04, l spotted a steady light pass over, north to south, from our home just west of Karşıyaka. Very similar to the ISS and had me thinking it was just that until l saw it as predicted. I don’t think what l saw was a plane. Maybe a satelite.
Anyone able to confirm what l saw was indeed a satelite please?

Re: Space station
i am in UK. June and July we were watching the sky train satellites. Never saw the actual train but kept seeing about 7 or 8 satellites about 1 or 2 minutes apart. While watching for these we saw quit a few solitary ones going in different directions. Skies have been too cloudy since then so still have not seen the train. Keep looking for next launch and hoping for a clear sky.
