Is it not when people turn the system on and put cold water into hot pipes. That would cause a break.

if you mean with "old way" the local made ones, i can assure you they are not "the best".
basically they are inefficient (at its best) and wasted money.

but when you will see with the vacuum type heaters a payback is another subject.

Interesting post, after 30 years one of the old panels has started to leak. Unfortunately nothing seems to be made to last anymore. The hot water tank was over 20 years before it went, not holding my breath on the new one to last as long.

here, we had many discussions about the"old ones".
for the summer they are ok, but in winter they are often useless, they often even "destroy heat".
they often only can "pre heat" the water (eg, from 15 to 20 or 25 degree) and you need to use the electric on top.
eg, you want one or two showers, each 10 liters.
for this you need to heat up the "standart 60-80 liter" hot water depot, which needs often 3 kWh (or, eg, 2 x half an hour) a day.
or 100 kWh a month, which is the eqivalent to a 10 kg gas bottle and does cost roughly double as the gas bottle.

pls note: for 10 liters heated up from say, 15 to 45 degree you need (approx) 1(kcal) x 10 (liter) x 30 (tempdifference) x 1,25 (losses, approx) = 360 kcal, which is approx 0,4 kWh. makes, say, 1 kWh a day for 20 liters.
theoretically this would be sufficient for 200 showers from one gas bottle, but we have other losses. in reality you come to 100 - 120 showers and you get hot water for the kitchen and sinks on top.

the left over energy stored in the "storage tank", due to bad insulation and "flow back", is cooling down again.
so, a lot of waisted energy and money..

pls note: teknecik power station runs on approx 37% efficiency. so, for 3,7 kWh electricity 1 liter of "very dirty" fuel needs to be "burnt".

people think by having one of these local "solar haeters" they save energy, do "someting for the environment" , but it is very doubtful that they achieve anything.

With the old sort you don’t have to leave pump on you can shower in power cuts if mains not running. Since last winter January 2023 i have had to use my immersion heater 4 times for a shower so how do you work out they usless. I think for here they are best but that’s what I find

very easy.
look at yesterday to today. yesterday it was sunny, the storage tanks upper part had 50 degree.
during the night it cooled down, too much to my opinion and maybe even below the shower temp.
today morning it shows rainy.
so, you may can have a single shower, eg, before work... but a second one becomes difficult... even if the " shower partner" goes immidiately after you.
so, if you are a "single household" and maybe happy with a from time to time 35 degree shower, or just delay the shower to next week... you are maybe ok.
as they have to use the immersion heater much more often as you think, for a 2 (+) family "full in life" a better and more reliable system is mandatory.
this applies for the solar (water) collectors and for the storage tank.
not the "solar panels" give you hot water. its the combination of heat collection and storage. its a "system", which even includes the water pipes.
(even) Kuzeymak explains the limits for their system which definitely is not "latest technology" (storage tank i would say too small, 5 cm foam insulation, horizontal orientation, heat transfer with inner copper pipe)

the electricity question is another issue.
that people pay (100) thousands for homes and (10) thousands for cars whatever, but not having an electric back up system is not really understandable..

Get a gas boiler - problem solved! I ditched my solar panels years ago, the one I inherited with the house was a tube system, the tubes failed and it leaked - in the summer it leaked boiling water which was not a good thing if you happened to wander underneath it. Replaced it with the local type very briefly but like hot water on demand so ditched the whole system and put my main water tank on the ground where I can get at it. Pumps on the ground as well. It is a simple setup and the only minor failing is if the electricity goes off we have no water pressure due to no gravity tank. Used to that now as well. We don't work so not in a rush but when we want hot water we have it - all the time. Would love to connect the whole thing to the mains water but live in Catalkoy - the land where the water gets switched off in the summer for up to ten days at a time!! If we did not have a well we would stink all summer - lol.
