Perhaps some may remember Radio Caroline more who are 60 this year and still broadcasting. The likes of Kenny Everett and Tony Blackburn started their radio careers on Radio Caroline. Laser 558 launched in 1984 and was also a Pirate Station broadcasting to the UK and Northern Europe from the MV Communicator in the international waters of the North Sea moored near the Ross Revenge, home of Radio Caroline. They played mostly 80's with a guarantee that you were "never more than a minute away from music". It is said that they helped Frankie's Relax get to number one as they were the only station playing it in the UK after it was banned by the BBC. They stopped broadcasting in 1985 but started again last year playing mostly 80's, a lot of original content, original adverts, original DJ quotes and time checks, original jingles etc, just a bit of nostalgia i suppose.

BFBS Germany played "Relax" when it was released. Maybe they thought that members of the military were a bit more laid back?

It was the BBC that got RELAX to no 1. Banning music invariably leads to a guaranteed hit. Kids taping off the radio depressed actual sales which were based on sales.

Remember the Cedar Wood adverts from Radio Luxembourg? "It's the wood you know, you can't get it", or is that going back too far???
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.
