Windows 10 October feature update - caution
Reports are coming in that that the windows 10 October feature update (1809) is deleting user files in some cases.
More info here
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/m ... 18-update/
and
https://wccftech.com/how-to-recover-fil ... ation/amp/
It would appear to only be affecting some users, but loosing all your personal files and needing to use deleted file recovery software as the only option to recover them is not great. Back up if you can (to a external drive, or usb stick if they will fit or to a cloud service, might be worth it before allowing the update to run.

Re: Windows 10 October feature update - caution
Thanks for the info Erol.
In the main, updates do seem to be evolving.
1) They started by being pretty pointless. 'Now you can tweet what film you are watching automatically.' And that is useful how?
2) Then they moved onto making your life more complicated. You actually now can't watch the film because you cant figure out how to get rid of the twitter screen which automatically appears no matter how many times you say no.
3) And now it seems they will just go through and destroy your films of your wedding, parents 50th anniversary, grandchildren's christenings etc. You can guarantee they will never delete the instagram feed they have put on your computer or your daily updates to the thoughts of Lily Allen on twitter.
And it's not as if you can opt out!
Would you like a really useful update? I don't quite understand it, and it looks as useful as Anne Frank's drum kit so no.
Sure you don't want an update? As sure as I still have a hole in my bottom.
If you don't have the update we will punish you by cocking up your computer. I'll take the risk.
You are having the update, the second you next turn on the computer it's updating you cant stop it.
Thank you for choosing to update

Best to switch Automatically Download updates OFF
Go to Start Menu (Bottom Left)
Select - Settings (Cog)

Re: Windows 10 October feature update - caution
I checked mine but it has already happened. As I always keep all my important stuff on 'dropbox' and als as a second back up on 'prime' and my 'back up' on an external drive, I seem to be ok, but what has happened is, that I can't play any videos properly, they all look like they are all too enlarged, all fuzzy, the sound is ok. I thought it was something to do with facebook, but now I read this thread, I checked all the videos and they all play the same, quite unwatchable. they are ok on my phone, but then I do not have Microsoft 10 on there, not Microsoft at all I think
What can I do about the videos, anybody any idea

Have followed Navek's advice, just in case.

My understanding, which may be wrong, is that there is no setting within windows 10 that allows you to turn updates off completely. You can pause/deffer/delay them for a period of time but not just turn them off entirely (with a settings option).Navek wrote:Best to switch Automatically Download updates OFF

My point exactly. You're getting them no matter what, resistance is futile!erol wrote: My understanding, which may be wrong, is that there is no setting within windows 10 that allows you to turn updates off completely. Re: Windows 10 October feature update - caution
In times gone by, I had a suspect Windows installation.
I had to make sure I did not have updates.
I'm sure you could stop updates.
OK. Maybe not now.
Time will tell.
But for now you can delay them,
Untill a fix comes along.
Download the update at your peril.
I've stopped It, or delayed it, for now.

For info it seems microsoft have stopped pushing out this update for now until they get to the bottom of the 'deleting users files' issue. More info here
