Thats life now sadly, for those people on a TL income there will be very little left by the time rent and petrol is paid for.

Fuel up, milk up too. Talk about bottles of gas going up by 20-30TL. It's the folk earning min wage in TL which is the biggest concern, not enough money to put food on the table, let alone anything else.

Most people are struggling to survive, rents can be capped but only if the landlord decides, still doesn't help much but hey ho.

No you're not dreaming and most of the time I can understand the increase but this one as follows, just seems OTT. Last week wanted something from a Yapi market, identical to one I purchased last year at 400tl. I expected an increase but was quoted 1,350tl this year. Didn't buy it.

It is an awful situation for locals or indeed anyone else paid in lira. And yet most of the folks who seem to be moaning are expats... probably getting pensions in sterling... so a bit of a win situation there. Think about others please, they have had to cope with the covid and lack of income from tourists and now they are hit again with the weak lira... where will it end for them, never mind we can all go and enjoy cheap booze... ciggies.... it's all very well to complain about costs going up in yapimarkets.... but for the local industry here it is soul destroying... please stop moaning and just think for one minute about those amongst us who are really struggling. OK rant over... and if you really want to help just give to the needy... you can live without a beer or two.

Excellent post and I'd add consider paying gardeners cleaners etc in sterling and well.mrsgee wrote: ↑Tue 07 Dec 2021 5:08 pmIt is an awful situation for locals or indeed anyone else paid in lira. I don't think most expats getting pension in Sterling are moaning so much about the rise in prices, more concern about those in need and how they must be struggling to cope.

Those that are moaning.... and some expats are, seem to think UK prices have magically stood still and are making daft comparisons with imported goods seemingly top of their priorities.

I do understand that there are some Groucho, but there will always be some. Just the same as there will be some shopkeepers who will try to profiteer from the current situation.
As for imported goods, always have been more expensive and understandably so. Most things you can buy a local equivalent, but for me, unfortunately, not found a local yeast extract to replace Marmite, or I would buy it.

Re: am I dreaming ?
There must be many like me - a pensioner paid in Sterling - who are torn between actually going out for a meal or freely buying meat, eggs, bread, fuel etc and therefore contributing to the economy and quite possibly assisting more than one business to survive.
YET feeling shame at being able to do this when other folks can not afford to.
Before you start on this please understand that everyone paid in Sterling is benefiting from the current exchange rates and EVERYONE is having to pay more for items than they ever did before! Almost everyone paid in Sterling can give to charities or can give to the needy but is that the answer?
Yes, I can live without a beer or two and the price of that can go to a charity - but what about the bar owner who now has less income, the supplier who has unsold stock, the brewery that now produces less! It is a very big picture here and not just a case of giving to the needy!!
I truly wish I had an answer but it is far beyond me and my control. This is a problem that only the TRNC can solve and although "Expats" can help and assist where they wish, anything they do will simply be a drop in the ocean of requirements. I love this country and its people and it saddens me to see them in this current situation.
Who has the answer and how can we - the expats - assist in making it happen?

Very easy, drink four or five beers at your bar outlet rather than your miserly 'one or two' and everyone is happy! Even the taxi driver chauffeuring you home!!

I was doing that but over the last year the lira has gone crazy and made it impossible. I switched to sterling and increased the payments (hence the advice to pay in sterling and well.
These workers are in a very real struggle to survive and if you can afford it do it. I know of some that have actually kept the lira payments the same over the last few years which is disgraceful.

Racketeering by many business TC outlets.
Products that were purchased and payed for at the then exchange rate should have the same 'ticket price'. New wholesale/import replacement prices should be adjusted accordingly. Fresh produce may immediately reflect any inflationary impact but not on 'old stock'.
The profiteering by the wealthy TC, so called, 'businessmen' have no regard for their fellow poor compatriots. I'm sure none have graduated from the LSE, but from Putins' law of 'supply, stop, starve and be forever supreme'!

Waddo, yes I totally get where you are coming from, it's really difficult. I do not know the answer either.
Ginge, I hear what you are saying. It's still not practical for some of us taking out Sterling if you don't have a Sterling account here without getting hit with quite nasty interest charges, unless you have the right UK bank card, Barclays I think (which I don't).

Apart from ex-pats spending all that they have here in the TRNC, I believe those in charge could do all that they can to encourage as much foreign investment as possible and at the same time, do all that they can to discourage anyone already here from leaving.
My suggestions:
Automatic issue of title deeds to foreigners, once the purchase price has been paid.
No requirement for P2P.
Five years Residency qualifies for Citizenship.
Simplify Residency so it's as easy as booking a flight.
Allow foreigners to open any business without additional restrictions.
All dealings with anyone in the Civil Service by appointment with a named individual by Whatsapp (video).
All casino losses to be refunded!

Brinsley, that was my point about a Yapi market charging me 400tl last time and 1,350tl this time for identical item. It's not easy either when a store I went into last week, to spend a not insubstantial amount, who refused point blank to accept a card. I didn't have that sort of money on me at the time and had to leave without a purchase. I take on board the difficulties being suffered by a lot of people, but it helps no one at all, when a store will only take cash.

I read some stores only want cash as it takes 30 something days to get money for card payments and they cant replenish stock without cash, sad situation.

Yep - I accept if you can't you can't but equally if you can - please do it.
What shocked me recently was seeing a restaurant manager sleeping on a boat in the harbour because he had no money for rent & gardeners sleeping in a meter cupboard.

It does sound as if some are clearly abusing the current financial crisis. Only thing to do is walk away. Makes me so angry to hear about this, greedy sods.
It's ridiculous that it takes 30 odd days to process a card payment. There is no need for that in this day and age, and who in their right mind would be carrying a huge wad of cash around? It doesn't help either that there is quite a low limit on taking out TL at an ATM, so you'd have to be going to a few.
Ginge that is really horrendous about sleeping conditions for some in this cold weather, it's heart breaking.

I prefer cash to card only because my Garanti card chooses to work randomly and the bank say there's no issue. Goodness knows why 30 days, it was something I read in YeniDüzen when they were interviewing shop owners.

Re: am I dreaming ?
Tuesday midnight petrol/gas price hike was announced to be implemented (1Tl a litre). Daytime Tuesday illuminated prices on the electronic sign were switched off but still selling petroleum products from the pump. Wednesday, still no indication of what the new prices are as the sign board still switched off but still serving gasoline from the pumps?! Alpet, my nearest petrol station, opposite Lemar, Girne. All very strange as the sign & pump electronic pricing console machine, change can be done in minutes.
If the price goes up it is the sign to be changed first and if the price goes down the pumps get changed first, always to the advantage of the driver.
All very strange to me!

Can't say about the Garanti card, but I've been told my Revolut card isn't working at times, usually been in Erdener. Have told them to try another POS, and hey presto, it works. There's something at the back of my mind that they have different POS machines with different banks, but I could well be wrong on that one.forestpixie wrote: ↑Wed 08 Dec 2021 6:06 pmI prefer cash to card only because my Garanti card chooses to work randomly and the bank say there's no issue. Re: am I dreaming ?
Re time taken to obtain money from a card. Last week a store owner told me it was 6 weeks on both a Debit and Credit card before he received the money. I said I was astounded as I've always believed that money from a Debit card leaves my account in UK that same day. "It may leave your account but its 6 weeks before it enters mine" If that really is the case, then the banking system here must be totally up the creek. Having said that, he wasn't aware there is a cap set of either 400-500pounds depending on UK bank, on how much I could withdraw in one day. So we both learned a salutary lesson.

Hi, Karen here, the bank charges are less if the retailer agrees to wait a longer period to receive the funds in their account. These can add up as so many people use cards.
Also I suppose if their account is overdrawn then they`ll want the cash. Its a really hard situation for everyone.
There was a post on Facebook yesterday, from the owner of Hurdeniz (it was in one of the papers too) who managed to keep their staff on, paid and fed, during the lockdown, survived it, but who has loans in sterling and had just had his car repossessed. There`s only so much businesses in this country can take and I suspect the exchange rate and sterling loans may just break the backs of many.
For some average families, not rich or poor just getting by, buying dishwasher tablets is a considered purchase now.

Thanks Karen for that information re bank cards. It really is a horrendous situation for many at the moment, with no signs of any improvement on the horizon.
